Siddhartha
compares meditation to the consumption of alcohol. There are several ways in
which to reach an “altered” state of consciousness. These include near-death experiences, dreams,
the use of drugs & alcohol, and meditation.
We cannot (most of us, at least) influence dreams or near-death
experiences. But many people enhance
their senses by choosing to take drugs or to practice meditation. Both are very popular across the world. What
do the effects of these actions have in common? Why do people feel such intense
desire to reach these states (get high, drunk or remove themselves from
reality)? What are the major
differences/benefits/downfalls between achieving an altered state by way of
drugs and by way of meditation ( salaat/prayer)? Compare and contrast them.
